The Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas – Universidade de Lisboa (ISCSP/ULisboa) was established in 1906 and is one of the oldest schools of social and political sciences in Lisbon.
ISCSP currently has more than 4000 students from 48 different countries, and houses three research centres, all of which have been certified as Very Good, Excellent and Good by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology: the Centre for Public Administration & Public Policies, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Gender Studies and the Orient Institute. ISCSP offers undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in many fields, such as: Social Policy, Public Administration, Anthropology, Communication Sciences, Political Sciences, Human Resource Management, International Relations, Sociology, and Social Work. Social Policy as an undergraduate course was introduced, in 1984, by ISCSP, and has more recently been restructured as a Master’s programme. ISCSP has also the PhD in Social Sciences with specialization in Social Policy and the PhD programme in Social Policy will be launched in the 2017/2018 academic year.
While fully embracing the challenges of the Global North, ISCSP is also devoted to the new social and political demands of the Global South, particularly in the context of the Portuguese-speaking countries.
ISCSP is located in a modern building designed by Gonçalo Byrne – one of the most prestigious contemporary Portuguese architects.
It is located in the traditional neighbourhood of Ajuda, near the Ajuda Palace. It offers a wonderful view of the River Tagus and is a 15-minute bus ride away from the historical Belém neighbourhood – with many different attractions such as the Jerónimos Monastery, the Cultural Centre of Belém and the popular patisserie, among others. It is a 20-minute bus ride away from the Marquês de Pombal Square, in the city centre.
There are many reasons to attend the conference and to visit ISCSP, which celebrates its 110th anniversary in 2016, to discover Lisbon and the University of Lisbon – one of the major Higher Education institutions in Europe and one of the Portuguese leading Universities.
